We need more clarity on COVID rules, Boris

BigChange clarity on COVID rules cartoon

Last month, Boris Johnson told the nation that it was time to go back to work.

Public transport was now safe to use, he claimed, so go out and stimulate the economy.

If he expected a stampede of commuters on August 1, he was disappointed. Just a third of Britain’s workers have gone back to the office so far this month. This is the lowest figure in Europe. In France, that number is as high as 83%.

It can’t have helped that the same day the Prime Minister was trying to chivvy us all back to the office, his Chief Scientific Advisor, Patrick Vallance, was telling people to ignore the advice and stay home.

Schools will reopen and are perfectly safe, we are told. Pubs are breeding grounds for the virus and may be closed down again. Soft play areas are dangerous but nurseries are not. Clubs are bad but gyms are fine.

We have been receiving mixed messages from Government throughout this pandemic and we are tired of it.

BigChange, like many resilient British firms, has been operating throughout lockdown. It’s been ‘business as usual’ for us, with almost every member of the team working from home. We have pivoted to offer virtual meetings and support and we’ve been delighted by the response from customers. We’ve had many stellar reviews over the last few months, proving to me that the virtual model works for us.

But we do want to help support the economy. We recognise the plight of many local businesses, like coffee shops that rely on commuter trade. We also want to offer access to the office to colleagues who want to come in for some peace and quiet, or to see colleagues (albeit at a distance).

I recently asked my network for some help finding a health and safety expert to review our office facilities and check whether it would be possible to reopen. A customer put us in touch with a brilliant gentleman who came and did a recce last week.

We have 10,000 square feet of space at our Leeds office. More than 100 people usually work there. Yet, taking into consideration all the new social distancing rules, just 15 people can now be in our office at any one time.

This is because the social areas, such as loos and kitchen, are not set up for social distancing. If I’m honest, they were too small even before we had to keep staff 2m apart. That’s just how offices are designed these days.

If we have just 15 people in the office, they can easily stay more than 2m apart. But does that mean they will be completely safe? We don’t know. The Government doesn’t know.

We use air conditioning in our offices, like many organisations across the UK. Most modern office buildings don’t even have windows that open; air is recirculated between floors. Could the virus be spread through the vents? We are in discussions with the landlord to try and find a solution but shouldn’t this be a job for Government?

And if we ask people to wear masks into the office, what masks should we tell them to wear? We don’t know. There is still no British standard for masks. People can wear any old piece of cloth, even though it’s possible that anything less than surgical grade does little to protect others.

Some business owners are opting to leave all internal doors open to minimise the risk of spreading the virus on door handles. That’s not an option for us. Our internal doors are fire doors. Fire beats COVID-19 on my list of risks. So are we expected to hire someone to disinfect all our doors and stainless steel surfaces every half an hour? Will that mean just 14 people from BigChange can now return to the office?

This is just a taste of the complexity business leaders are facing right now. Government is issuing statements and practical guidance – but often these are conflicting or out of date. The threat of local lockdowns and second waves will be with us for months to come. This is why BigChange remains committed to working from home for the foreseeable.

However, we are setting up the office to enable limited use. Our employees will be able to book a slot if they need a better working environment or to work with new team members. Attendance will be completely voluntary. People can choose not to come to the office at all. In the meantime, we will continue to look for new and effective virtual approaches to developing company culture and building relationships between teams.

So my question to you, Prime Minister, is this:

How can you expect business leaders to reopen offices and get people back to work when regulations dictate that we can only have a fraction of the team in the building at one time? How can we reassure our staff we are prioritizing their safety when there is no definitive decision on all the risks they may face?

You may be able to chop and change and send out mixed messages, but I take the welfare of my people extremely seriously and I want them to know everything I tell them is correct, verifiable, and in their best interests.

So, come on, Boris. Sort out this mess.

Leeds United and the halo effect

BigChange Leeds United and the halo effect

The fortunes of local businesses have always been inextricably linked with football.

There’s a certain magic that happens when a city’s economy thrives and the local football team is at the top of its game. It’s as though the success of one magnifies the other.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot. After 16 long years, Leeds was finally promoted back into the Premier League on July 17th. This was a momentous occasion for me, both as a lifelong Leeds fan, but also as an entrepreneur.

Throughout my whole career, Leeds United has been a partner in my success. When I was staying in a small hotel in Serenje District in Zambia, the gentleman at reception had not heard of Leeds – “But I know Leeds United,” he said. At meetings in Israel, saying that we were based in Leeds became a major advantage when everyone realised that our local team had featured sporting legends like Jack Charlton, Billy Bremner, Gary Speed and Norman Hunter.

BigChange Leeds United shirt

It’s a strange but powerful phenomenon: BigChange is all the richer from its association with Leeds United. Even during the darkest days at the club, when fans were chanting, ‘We’re not famous any more’, we were still trading on the longstanding value and currency generated by United. The name Leeds United is a form of free advertising, and a helping hand when doing deals with anyone who has a passing interest in football.

This is why I’m so proud that BigChange is now a Gold Digital Partner at Elland Road. Our logo is projected onto the field, and we will be back in the box supporting our team as soon as lockdown rules permit. Customers are already getting in touch, asking to come and watch games with us later in the year or in 2021. It’s an unrivalled opportunity to network; everyone in the room is united by their love of the beautiful game.

The Premier League creates an enormous amount of value for the UK economy. Each year, the League brings in an estimated £7.6bn through ticket sales, jobs, brand value and taxes. No one has analysed the economic impact of Leeds United in recent years but it is estimated that Manchester United generated £330m a year for Manchester.

Andrea Radrizzani’s full takeover of Leeds United in May 2017 brought a real buzz back to the game, and the city. Leeds United has pulled off an extraordinary turnaround to be back in the top flight. Right now, I can feel the renewed hope and enthusiasm in my bones.

It gives all of us Yorkshire leaders a boost, and a feeling that we too can achieve anything. Amidst all the gloom, it’s a shot in the arm.

Let’s keep marching on together.

CEO’s Blog – “I want my freedom, and I like to drive fast.”

Drive fast

Over the years, I’ve met lots of senior executives who want tracking technology installed in the commercial vehicles driven by their employees – but refuse to have it in their own car.

They want to slash fuel bills and insurance premiums by ensuring their drivers and engineers are tracked but they see themselves as above it all. It’s terrible.

I have been working with Brake, the road safety charity, for over 12 years. First at Masternaut, the company I sold a few years ago, and now at BigChange. I’m proud to be a corporate member, and raise money for the charity through initiatives like Drive for Life, the world’s largest safe driving competition, which I created eight years ago. It monitored the driving habits of 50,000 drivers – a world first.

I recently attended a Brake charity event at the Houses of Parliament. It was an incredibly moving evening. We heard about the special officers who are despatched by the police to inform families that their loved one has died in a road traffic accident. They have to comfort the bereaved, it’s a tough job.

Jesse Norman, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department for Transport, spoke at the dinner. As he finished his speech, I raised my hand and said I wanted to ask an important question. He asked if it could wait but I just keep on going, and said, “Why aren’t you or the health and safety executive making sure that company bosses fit tracking devices to their vehicles to set an example to the rest of their employees, and promote better driver behaviour?”

Direct Line Presentation

He took me by surprise when he agreed with me. He said, “You’re exactly right, we need to start at the top.”

At BigChange, we track the driving habits of 20,000 drivers across the UK. I’m acutely aware of my responsibility, as the founder of this business, to make a difference. I have it in my hands to promote safe driving and save lives.

At least a third of road deaths and a quarter of serious injuries are from crashes involving someone driving for work – whether it’s a company car driver, a professional driver of a commercial vehicle, or someone driving their own vehicle on company business. This is why every single one of our company vehicles has a tracker, and every person who claims mileage as an expense has to be tracked by our system. I’m on the system, even when I’m driving my wife’s car, and my profile is open to view – you can watch me driving around later today.

Each month, we name and shame the worst driving member of the team, and encourage them to improve. We also have an award for the best – and most improved – driver. Next month, launching Driving BigChange, and hope to have around 25,000 customers signed up to the initiative. We’ll measure their driving for six months and announce the winner in December.

Campaigners to slow down
I’m also planning to launch the BigChange “Leaders for Life” Campaign, company directors and bosses who will compete to beat their peers at being the safest boss on the road. It’s about creating a group of ambassadors who can set an example. Unlike the executives who just want to reap the financial benefits of a tracker, these enlightened leaders want to help save lives.

I can’t stress enough how important this cause is to me. If we get this right, there is the potential to make the roads so much safer. Thanks for reading and get in touch if you’d like any more information about Brake or the work we do with the charity.

All the best

CEO’s Blog – BigChange June Motivational Monday welcomes – Bob Champion MBE is an English former jump jockey who won the 1981 Grand National on Aldaniti.

Motiviational Mondays

Bob Champion MBE is an English former jump jockey who won the 1981 Grand National on Aldaniti.

His triumph was made into a film Champions, with John Hurt portraying Champion. The film is based on Champion’s book Champions Story, which he wrote with close friend and racing journalist and broadcaster Jonathan Powell. Champion was born in

Guisborough in the North Riding of Yorkshire. At the height of his career as a jockey, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in July 1979. He was treated with an orchidectomy and with the chemotherapeutic drugs bleomycin, vinblastine and cisplatin, and also had an exploratory operation to identify cancer in his lymph nodes. His victory on Aldaniti was viewed by many as a great triumph, following his previous adversity. Their victory earned them that year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year Team Award and was chosen as one of the 100 Greatest Sporting Moments by Channel 4 viewers in 2002. Other major races that Champion won during his career include the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup and the Whitbread Trial Chase. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 1982 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

In 1983 he formed the Bob Champion Cancer Trust, which has raised millions of pounds for cancer research. He retired from training horses in 1999. He was the subject of This Is Your Life in 1981 when he was surprised, on his wedding day, by Eamonn Andrews. On 22 December 2011, Bob Champion received the Helen Rollason award as part of the 2011 BBC Sports Personality of the Year competition.

CEO’s Blog – BigChange are proud to sponsor Nicolas Hamilton the 25-year-old brother of four-times Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton

Nicolas Hamilton

Nicolas Hamilton is confident he can become a regular front-running name in the Renault UK Clio Cup in 2018 as he prepares for his first pre-season test of the year at the famous Brands Hatch circuit in Kent today.

Hamilton will rejoin the WDE Motorsport team for the forthcoming season after contesting five race events for the Ashford based squad last year.

Born with Cerebral Palsy, he is an ambassador and inspiration for disabled athletes and to compete in the Clio Cup requires modifications to his car (such as a hand clutch and minor pedal adjustments).

Hamilton, also the 25-year-old brother of four-times Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, commented: “I’m super excited about getting back in a car as, after Silverstone last year, I was contemplating quitting motor sport all together. Now after working as hard as possible to raise the budget over the winter, I am so proud to have independently secured the support of my sponsors to give myself the best opportunity this year.

Nicolas Hamilton by. car

“The Clio Cup cars are terrific to drive and, with all the data you’re able to work with and the high level of competition, it’s a championship that stands out in terms of driver development. “Crucially for me, I’ll be doing some actual testing which I’ve never had an opportunity to do since I first started racing in 2011 (in Clio Cup) or even when I had a spell in the British Touring Car Championship a few years ago. “I’m aiming to consistently be inside the top ten which I showed was possible during parts of last year with barely any practice. I’m going into this season with a ‘fresh start’ and better prepared than ever – so much so that it actually feels like I’m starting my whole career again…”

Hamilton’s brand and profile makes him a big hit with the vast numbers of public that come to see the Clio Cup race alongside the BTCC. Notably for 2018 he will have a new-look car, with JET Petroleum becoming his primary sponsor along with Monster Energy, DUO Plc, BigChange, Ark Build Plc and Ark MEP Plc.

He continued: “There’ll be a lot of yellow which is one of the colours that stands out most on TV! I just need to be up near the front a bit more, that’s all… “The Clio Cup is a great environment to build your brand and your sponsors’ brands and I’m even looking to up my presence a bit more this year – JET are very family orientated and that connects with my story and how I want to inspire people.”

WDE Team Principal Wayne Eason said: “We’re delighted to have Nic back as part of our team in 2018. Despite what people might think, he has to work just as hard as anyone else to put his racing budget together and I’ve never seen him so hungry to succeed. I strongly believe he can make considerable gains in his performances with us this year and will play an extremely important role in our results.”

The 2018 Renault UK Clio Cup gets under way with its opening two rounds at Brands Hatch on Sat 7/Sun 8 April. All 18 of its rounds will take place at the BTCC’s high-profile events meaning it appears in front of huge trackside crowds (38,500 on average in 2017) and also live on ITV4.

Renault Sport’s UK Motorsport Championship Manager Will Fewkes said: “Nic’s inspirational story continues to capture the imaginations of thousands of people and we are very pleased to see him choosing to race in the Clio Cup again. His determination is second to none and this could lead to some great results in 2018.”

Media Opportunity

The Renault UK Clio Cup’s annual Media Day will take place at Silverstone, Northamptonshire on Thursday 15 March. The event offers media a first glimpse of the 2018 grid and plenty of opportunity to film, photograph and interview the drivers. CEO’s Blog – Government promises new ‘tech hubs’ for Yorkshire

Tech hubs for Yorkshire

TWO tech hubs are to be created in Yorkshire designed to help support businesses and skills in the area. The Treasury said two hubs would be created in Leeds and Sheffield with the project set to roll out from April.

The hubs are two of 11 to be created nationally and will benefit from a share of the £21m earmarked from the expansion of the Tech City project. The announcement came as Philip Hammond announced £500m of investment would be used to increase the development of Artificial Intelligence, as well as 5G and full fibre broadband. The new Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation would be created to work with government, regulators and industry to “lay the foundations for AI adoption”. “The world is on the brink of a technological revolution,” Mr Hammond said “A new tech business is founded in Britain every hour. And I want that to be every half-hour. So today we invest over £500m in a range of initiatives from AI to 5G and full fibre broadband.”

Martin Port, founder and chief executive Leeds-based technology start-up BigChange, said:

“We welcome this announcement and support for tech businesses from the Chancellor. “Financial backing and stability is a huge hurdle facing all start-ups, so I am pleased to see the government pledge more than £20bn of new investment.”

“I just hope this funding is easy to access and readily available for those who need it, rather than being hidden among reams of red tape.”

AI has become increasingly prominent in mainstream technology, with many of the popular gadgets such as the Amazon Echo powered by the technology. However Richard Parris, chief executive of digital firm Intercede, warned that a lack of investment in cybersecurity was a crucial issue that still needed addressing.

CEO’s Blog – Q&A with Best British Mobile Startup 2017 finalist, BigChange Apps

QA with Best british Mobile setup

Leeds-based finalist, BigChange specialises in mobile workforce management, and will be heading to Barcelona for the Mobile World Congress in February. Three other finalists will be competing, with only one of them set to be crowned the Best British Mobile Startup of 2017.

Who are BigChange Apps?

BigChange Apps are the next big thing in mobile workforce management. They have brought us JobWatch – an end-to-end solution that can be applied to almost any sector.

Those who sign up to JobWatch can see an increase in productivity and profitability just by using this little web-based app that packs a punch. It even integrates with accountancy software like Sage and Quickbooks for ease of use.

This revolutionary company started out in 2012 and is aiming to transform several industries with its software. The BBMS could be the springboard this company needs to infiltrate the global market.

What did they say about Best British Mobile Startup?

After their success in Leeds, we caught up with BigChange Apps, and this is what they had to say about their experience:

What made you enter the Best British Mobile startup competition?

The opportunity to showcase our business to the judges, and global investors, at the world’s largest annual mobile industry gathering was too good to miss! It’s a potential game-changer for us, and is something we want to be a part of. The MWC is a hive of innovation and excitement, and the prize itself is an opportunity of a lifetime.

How was your experience of winning the regional competition?

Competition was fierce; there were so many incredible pitches and innovative business ideas and platforms. Having applied previously in 2015, we knew how discerning the judges would be. We were overjoyed when we heard the result – it feels great to have reached the final and is a real credit to our team who have made the app and platform what it is today.

What do you think is the biggest challenge in a startup pitch?

Getting your proposition across concisely, emotively and engagingly in a short amount of time. There’s a lot you need to cover – from why it’s disruptive, why customers should care about it, to the traction you’ve already gained. The stakes are high, so you need to keep your cool. Absolute focus and true passion is essential.

How will you prepare for showcasing at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona?

Practise makes perfect! We will sharpen our pitch so we can make a huge impact in the final. We want it to be pitch perfect, but at the same time, we know taking part will be a lot of fun! The main thing is to look forward to this incredible opportunity.

Why will your company become this year’s Best British Mobile Startup?

Our product, JobWatch, has a lot to offer the supply side of the business and the end consumer – it’s an incredibly attractive proposition. We’re one of the first companies to combine a business management platform, an on-demand app for consumers, and a global collaboration network for sharing and sub-contracting work. Our growth in the last few years demonstrates the global potential. BigChange Apps also has great leadership and an energised, passionate team who are on a mission to really make a difference worldwide. These are the qualities that will make us a winner in 2017.

The final’s not too far away now. Will this app be a success like former winners RefMe and what3words? We’ll find out soon.

CEO’s Blog – Leaner fitter BigChange organisation for 2017

Leaner, fitter, BigChange

BigChange Welcomes Dale Light, We will be providing a delicious healthy vegetarian meal selection comprising of fresh soups and main coarse dishes from next Tuesday.

We will be promoting this new initiative the food will not only be healthy and tasty but also good value for money hopefully this will meet everyone’s lunchtime budget.

NOW DOWN TO BUSINESS!!

I hope you are all keeping your New Year resolutions?

Party time is now over and it is time to get down NOW to losing that Christmas excess!

There is never an easier time to lose weight, than in January. Everywhere you look everyone is talking about diet, fitness and wellbeing. The latest ‘miracle’ diets are being tried by all.

Statistically we follow these kinds of diets for 2 weeks before boredom kicks in then the weight you have lost slowly creeps back on! Over the holiday, I have been studying all the different types of diet that are out at the moment and it is, as always, utterly contradictory.

Experts have agreed that the BEST diet after numerous researches of all diets is a plant based (vegetarian) low sugar diet without any artificial additives or preservatives.

We all know (experts included) that the best and healthiest way to lose weight is 1-2lbs per week but when your scales are showing that the pounds have piled on, it’s normal to be impatient and want it off quick!!

With this in mind I have launched BigChange weight management in collaboration with Dale’s Diet ‘Skinny Plan’ it is designed for a quick boost to your weight loss efforts.

It is still eating food, not crazy liquid drinks, but it is more hard-core than the normal eating plan and does have great results.

The problem one has when they do ‘Quick fixes’ is that as soon as you cut out food groups your brain registers you’re not having them. Once you return to suddenly eating them again, your body stores them in a panic and they are then stored as fat. This is why you need to reintroduce slowly, slowly.

It is not just calories we need to look at, it is protein, saturated fat and of course our new enemy those hidden sugars and even sweeteners! Sugar has now been proved to be as addictive and habit forming as nicotine or any drug.

By following Dales plan, the hard work is done for you and you can eat with confidence that you are eating healthily. The myth that you can’t eat certain foods (i.e. carbohydrates) when dieting is rubbish although you should reduce them.

Dale has lots of clients who have lost amazing amounts of weight by eating everything. I just cut the gluten, the wheat, saturated fat and sugar. Also one of the most important areas….the portion size. The hardest part of dieting is the planning, shopping and preparation of meals. Dale has done all that for you all you need to do is buy some salad/extra veg if required and any meat/fish if you wish to add.

One problem that many of us have is alcohol try to have a clean January if you can but if not certainly reduce your intake. Why not swap onto a spirit such as gin & tonic or vodka. It is less calories but also lasts longer wine is a definite unknown quantity and that’s where the problem lies. It is much easier to say no to an extra spirit than a quick refill of wine.

Exercise….the dreaded word….I don’t have time…I hear you say? We can all fit some exercise into our day; again we just have to think smart. No time for the gym? Why not run up and down your stairs 5 times in a row think about how much that is over a week and it gets the heart pumping, (The most important muscle in your body that most of us ignore!) Or take a lunchtime walk around the beautiful Colton Country Estate!

Park your car a bit further away from your destination than usual so you have to walk a little bit further each day. Try some sit ups before bed. Instead of getting in the car to go somewhere nearby think….no….I will walk. Walking briskly really is so beneficial. You have to find an exercise you enjoy so what about a Zumba class or any dancing class, make it fun and you will stick to it. As I always say little small changes make a BigChange all add up and over time make a massive difference.

DON’T PUT IT OFF START TODAY AND YOU WILL SEE A NEW YOU.

You will be happier, healthier and have a completely different outlook on life once you have achieved your goal.

CEO’s Blog – Great News BigChange Apps has been shortlisted for The Tech City Insider Awards 2015

BigChange App shortlisted

The shortlist for the inaugural TechCities Awards, celebrating the best in UK new technology business, has been published.

We’ll be giving out 19 awards on November 26, alongside four extra awards for people in our TechNation200 list for 2015. Julian Blake reports.

After spending the month of October accepting nominations from across the UK, TechCityinsider has drawn up the shortlist of three tech businesses for each of 19 TechCities Awards.

There are 14 awards for UK regional technology clusters, along with four separate awards for London, as the UK’s predominant tech business hub – and the location from where we received most entries by far.

The TechCities Awards for London are for newcomer, innovator, scale-up and tech business of the year. TechCityinsider received almost 200 applications from around the UK for the awards.

The awards are designed to celebrate the UK’s best next-generation digital business. It follows TechCityinsider’s year-long tour of the key technology clusters around the country, where we met and interviewed tech business leaders.

Winners will be announced at the TechCities Awards ceremony on November 26, at Trampery Old Street in the heart of the east London technology community. All shortlisted companies have been invited to attend.

Judges for the awards are TCi’s expert partners, from City University London, Grant Thornton, Knowledge Transfer Network, NatWest, Vitamin T, Tech London Advocates and Williams Powell.

In making their decisions, judges will be looking for companies that are the most innovative and likely to succeed. Entrants needed to be less than five years old and have a viable tech product or service at the centre of their business proposition.

Three businesses, drawn from entrants around the country, have been shortlisted to receive an additional award, the TechCities editor’s award, given to the business that has made an outstanding contribution to the UK technology scene.

In addition to the TechCities Awards, TCi will be giving out four awards to people who feature on our 2015 TechNation200 list.

These awards are for entrepreneur of the year, ambassador of the year, tech for good and tech funder award.

Alongside the national recognition that the awards generate, every winner receives a specially designed trophy created by the London maker community.

TechCitinsider publishes its 2015 TechNation200 Almanac on November 26, at a evening launch party at east London’s Shoreditch House, directly after the Trampery awards event.
